As babies are discharged from the maternity hospital, we welcome them together with their parents. In so doing, we seek to support the parental function, as well as to intervene early on to prevent potential problems in infant psychosomatic development and parent-infant relationship. Imposing limits to babies since the early days of their life has been an issue of much debate. Behind parents’ “troubling quest for boundaries” at such an early stage, there sometimes lurks fear, which might turn into terror. This sense of anxiety is associated with parents’ shock in the face of the new and unexpected things occurring after children arrive. This is especially true when babies start to differ from parents’ behavioural and/or growth expectations.
